What is Yoga ?
Yoga is a group of mental, physical, and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India.
Modern Yoga is a physical activity consisting largely of postures called asanas, often connected by flowing sequences called vinyasas. Depending on the yoga class, it can sometimes be accompanied by the breathing exercises of pranayama, and usually is followed by a period of relaxation or meditation. Modern yoga was created by the blending of Western styles of gymnastics and postures from Hatha Yoga in India in the 20th century.
Sanskrit is a language of ancient India with a history going back about 3,500 years. Chances are that while taking a yoga class you have heard a teacher say the poses in another language and this is Sanskrit. It has been said that when a Sanskrit word is spoken because of its ancient origin that it has its own consciousness. It is believed that speaking Sanskrit while doing yoga poses deepens the practice by bringing in the consciousness of the word and allowing you connect to the history and origins of the rich philosophy of yoga.
